NEW YEAR, NEW VISION: INTRODUCING THE NEW HILTON HEAD CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BLUFFTON CAMPUS Open Space Team Musings and Meanderings

While 2021 signals a hopeful departure from the restraints of the global pandemic, it also represents new beginnings for our clients throughout the Lowcountry. One of our most ambitious educational design projects to date, the Hilton Head Christian Academy Bluffton campus, debuts this month with open collaborative spaces and a 41-year legacy that inspired the new 21st century learning community. At its new address in Bluffton, Hilton Head Christian Academy will transform the way students learn, from the kindergarten level to high school. Not only will the curriculum support a modern 21st century approach to lessons, the new buildings have been designed to fit the students’ needs and offer a bright open environment that counters old school floorplans including traditional classrooms and hallways. “There are no hallways but rather a series of interconnected learning environments that support class presentations or other activities such as independent study sessions with mentors,” explains James Atkins. “Art, science and fabrication laboratories or “fab labs” connect to patios and porches that allow students to work outside on projects such as pottery or painting.” Project manager Zenos Morris points out the role of flexible space and learning suites that will accommodate groups of teachers (mentors) and students for consultations or expanded lessons. “The building is designed to foster constant movement. There isn’t a space that feels stagnant.”
