Brews To Go, Crews to Stay [RIVER DOG BREWING CO] Open Space Events

Our client River Dog Brewing Company talks about staff loyalty during the pandemic.

When Dawna Gray and family launched their award-winning, nationally recognized River Dog Brewing Company eight years ago, they had already grown attached to the Lowcountry and the community spirit Dawna describes as “kind and generous.” After building a second home in Palmetto Bluff, they befriended numerous Bluffton neighbors and stepped into the thriving Lowcountry business network with a new hand-crafted beer brand and brewery concept, the River Dog Brewing Company, located on Brown Cove Road North (near intersection of Hwy 278 and SR 170 in Okatie).

Gray and son Michael Nerhus, River Dog’s general manger, were in the process of opening their second brewery on Buckwalter Parkway when the Coronavirus pandemic struck, forcing a halt to retail and food and beverage business like none of us has ever seen. With 11 full-time employees in place, a new office building opened and another brewery in progress, the Gray family was hard pressed to make quick decisions. “We knew what the right thing was to do,” Dawna said. “We wanted to give back to the community that has inspired us on so many levels, so we didn’t let any of our staff go or place them on furlough plans.”

All of River Dog’s staff members remain on the payroll, with full salaries and benefits in place, including health/life insurance plus disability coverage. “It’s a tall order but our staff have been completely loyal to us and now we’re returning the favor,” she added.

In order to keep some revenue flowing while the order to shelter in place remains in effect, the River Dog crew has cleverly implemented a drive thru feature at their Brown Cove Road locations. Michael and the local brew master encourage patrons to stop by to pick-up your favorite hand-crafted brew, ranging from Sea Pines LightHouse Blonde to IPA on the Beach, IPA on the Boat and others.

“We’re open Thursday through Saturdays,” Micheal said. “You can phone in your order and pick up between 2 and 6 pm on Thursday and Friday and between noon and 6 pm Saturday.” He emphasized that River Dog is working with DHEC and CDC to keep in compliance with all the latest Covid-19 guidelines.

Days and hours of drive-thru operation are subject to change, like the evolving Coronavirus landscape across the country. Be sure to call River Dog or visit their website before you plan your IPA pick up. The Grays thank you for supporting their business, which in turn allows them to support their brew crews!
